- Read PDF

  1. Kibur Deacon Lule,

How do you interpret the veses in the gospel that say "tsadikin besadik SEM (name of a saint); nebeyen benebey SEM (name of prophet)yemikbel yesadikun or yenebyon waga yagegnal"? Mt 10: 40-42

Okay, let's say St Mary did not pray the spcific prayers at Goligota; however, how can you deny the blessings that a Christian can get doing goood things in the name of St Mary? Isn't St. Mary greater than the other saints and the prophets? If the names of the regular saints and those of the prophets can help us get blessings, what greater blessings can be given for the sake of St. Mary's name?

Your analysis of the writing in that book appears plausible, but you have missed the great point at Mat 10: 40-42! I am not an advocate of the book of teamere Mariam, but your conclusion refuting the blessings that we can get in the name of St Mary is very much misleading. We can criticize the book, but we cannot deny the words that directly came from our Lord Christ Jesus. You have missed the point.

  2. A question often asked by those who don't believe in intercession: Do Angels and saints know our affairs on earth and can they receive our prayers?

The answer is an emphatic yes for the following reasons: (Pope Shenouda of the Coptic Church)

1- There is no doubt that the knowledge of those in heaven is far more than that of those on earth. Saint Paul tells us: "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." (1Co 13:12). This means that our knowledge will increase as we reach the "other world" and many mysteries will be revealed to us once we shed this carnal body that restrains the spirit. There and then our knowledge shall increase and we shall depart from the circle of "knowledge in part" to a much wider circle of knowledge.

2- Angels know our affairs on earth as is evident from the Lord's saying: "there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth" (Luke 15:10). The affairs of those on earth are thus known to the heavenly be they Angels or spirits of the righteous. They know those who repent and they rejoice for their repentance for how can they rejoice if they don't know?

3-Angels know our prayers because they carry our prayers to the throne of God. The evidence
for this is abundant especially in the book of revelation where we are told that the prayers of the saints are offered before God from the hands of the Angel and from his censer.(Rev 8:3-
    5) The same can be said of the "four and twenty elders" (priests) in Rev 5:8 "having every one of them..golden vials full of odours which are the prayers of the saints." This is evidence of their knowledge of our prayers which they offer to God. The same can be said of our Guardian
Angel "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven." (Mat 18:10)

4- Another example is the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:25, where Abraham tells
the rich man: "Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things.." How did our father Abraham know about the lives of both Lazarus and the rich man? Again when the rich man asks Abraham to send Lazarus to his five brothers to "testify unto them lest they also come to this place of torment" Abraham answers: "They have Moses and the prophets" (Luke 1628,29). How could Abraham have known about Moses and the prophets knowing that he departed from earth hundreds of years before the birth of Moses and the other prophets? Obviously he knew about all these things. How could he not know when the Lord says of him: "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day:and he saw it, and was glad." (Jn
    8:56).

5- The testimony of the spirits of the martyrs: Saint John tells us in the book of Revelations: "I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long O Lord, Holy and true, dost Thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them, and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellow-servants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be
    fulfilled." (Rev 6:9-11).
You see, those martyrs knew after their death, that the Lord had not yet avenged them, and they
cry unto God: How long willt Thou suffer that iniquity be victorious on earth? And how long
willt Thou suffer that the strong in the flesh destroy thy children? And how long will they
continue shedding their blood? How could those martyrs know about these things? They knew
indeed, and when their "fellow-servants shall be fulfilled" they will know.

6- Another amazing incident involving Elijah the prophet is recorded in 2Ch 21. The story is
told of King Jehoram who slew all his children, made high places (for the worship of idols), and
wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord.."And there came a writing to him from
Elijah the prophet saying thus saith the Lord....because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father....behold, with a great plague will the Lord smite thy people and thy children..." This, in spite of the fact that Elijah was taken up to heaven several years earlier! How could this happen? and how did Elijah know after his departure from earth? and how did he manage to send this message?

7- The departed saints live, the Lord explains this to the Sadducees: "have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God saying: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. God is not a God of the dead, but of the living." (Mat 22:31,32). Those saints are
living, so why consider them dead by not asking for their prayers? Both Moses and Elijah appeared with the Lord on Mount Tabor during the Transfiguration. Moses who died in the flesh 14 centuries earlier, was seen with the Lord alive same like Elijah who was taken up to heaven. The spirits of the righteous are immortal, they are in paradise, where they see and know more than we do. Let us now consider some biblical examples of the intercession of the Angels:
The book of Zechariah tells us of an Angel interceding on behalf of Jerusalem, "Then the angel of the Lord answered and said: O Lord of hosts, how long willt Thou not have mercy on
Jerusalem..." his intercession was indeed accepted by the Lord "thus saith the Lord: I am
returned to Jerusalem with mercies, my house shall be built in it saith the Lord of hosts" (Zech 1:12-16).
Another example is the Angel interceding on behalf of Joshua the high priest, when Satan was
standing to resist him, we hear the Angel say "The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan...is not this a brand plucked out of fire?" The intercession of the Angel was indeed accepted for we are told concerning Joshua: "Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, behold I have caused thy iniquity to pass from thee.." (Zech 3:1-4). We are also told of Israel when he blessed the two children of Joseph his son that he said: "The
Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads." (Gen 48:16).
Angels are described in the epistle to the Hebrews as "ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation." (Heb 1:14). If they have a ministry on behalf of people here on earth, how much more would be their ministry on our behalf in heaven where they belong?

    Pope Shenouda

Let us finally answer another objection that is put forward:

Some say that we should not "pray to the saints" only to God. Indeed! for in asking for their help we are not praying to the saints but actually asking them to pray on our behalf.
We ask for the saints intercession because of the great favor they have with God.
We ask for their intercession because God allowed and accepted such intercessions.
We believe in intercession because we believe in the life of the world to come. Because we
believe that the saints who departed are alive.
We ask for the intercession of the Saints to honor them for God himself honors them by
accepting their intercessions. "If any man serve me, him will my Father honor." (Jn 12:26).
We believe in intercession because we believe in the unity of the body of Christ (the church) we are all members of the one body whether we are here on earth or there in heaven. We intercede for them by praying for those who departed, and they intercede for us, and this exemplifies the true unity of the body of Christ.

By believing in intercession we practice humility, deeming ourselves needy for the prayers of those saints who have pleased God.

  6. What the hell are you talking man!? who are you after all to research on these Holy homily books? This is out of limitless stupidity and illiteracy. you may think that you know more but any simple man or layman can easily understand your way of interpreting and sense of understanding. for example if you take the thing you said about the covenant of Saint Mary, you should first ask when, how and why? but you confidently stated that the situation had happened during the time when our Lord God was in the tomb. how come? during that time she was totally under shock and she was waiting for His resurrection with all the other apostles. Do you think we are totally ignorant to this extent? I am so sorry for you man! and what matters most is not that there are a lot of miracles and unbelievable things in these books and same in the bible but you always select what seems suitable to your way of life and comfort not according to the teaching of the true God, Jesus Christ.
God bless the true church with all its Traditions and the teachings of the fathers!

  8. For Nathan, I will gladly try to answer your question. Please be open mind and read.

    Question

"How do you interpret the veses in the gospel that say "tsadikin besadik SEM (name of a saint); nebeyen benebey SEM (name of prophet)yemikbel yesadikun or yenebyon waga yagegnal"? Mt 10: 40-42"

Answer. The chapter is - The Sending of the Twelve to preach.

10:5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not.

    {
Read the 10 points provided below ...

    }

11:1 when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples ...

    Now Read the chapter

1 - Twelve disciples chosen and commissioned
2 - Where they are to go: only to Israel
3 - What they are to do: go out preach, heal
4 - How they were to provide for themselves
    5 - Persecution will come
6 - God will defend and speak for them.
7 - Extent of persecution: even among families
8 - Why Jesus’ disciples must expect persecution
9 - Jesus’ disciples should not fear
10 - The reward due to those who receive them

My brother, that verse has been used for ....
but the truth is, it is said for the Hawariat (12) and offcouse we can use it for today who are teachers and preachers of the word of God.

Like Papasat ... who server us.

Instead of perscuting God's messangers (preachers who are telling us the truth, we need to receive them)

10:40 "He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me"

  9. Hey the last Anonymous, unless you are totaly blind, this is 1 + 1. Ende bale Eyemro Aseb. The writer has seen in light of the word of God, by Holy Spirit. you seem to be on the side of the darkness (Satan). You better come to the lord Jesus Christ. He will show you the truth. We know for sure that, Tamre Mariam and other Awaled books are full of lies and teret and fetera. Are you telling us the Bible has lies? What a lost brother we have out there. Sorry for you.

  10. Annonymous @ June 29, 2011 8:50 AM ,

To be frank, you are a lost soul. If you interpret these key verses in such a narrow way, what great damage have you done to yourself and others already. You guys put yoursefl above the saints and St Mary, but do you know what the price of undeserved pride is? It is simply hell. We are inferior to all the saints and St. Mary. I also want to remind the saints who have departed this world (graduated) live in heaven in a more glorious way with full knowledge (please read the detailed answers by Pope Shenouda).

Please don't battle with the bible. What we all want is salvation, not groundless argument.

You're absolutely right, you got the point.

On verse 40-42, Jesus is talking about: the disciples, the welcomer and the the giver, those who recognize a prophet as a prophet, a righteous man as a righteous man as a disciples of Jesus. Verse 42 refers to kindness done by Christians to other Christians under difficult circumstances.

  12. Bro Nathan,

If the pope thinks like that, he is then need to re-read his bible. That is very basic. You and many more people are reading it "in such a narrow way" read the whole chapter not a narrow verse brother. That will kill you. You are the one battling with the bible. I like and respect Pope Shenouda but he is not my reference point for all spritual matters. He can make mistaks too just like this one. Hidena rasehen lekahen assay another funny interpritation used out of context.

Good luck, you are not far from the truth. One of these days you will see some lights ... Stay tune

  13. St Mary and other saints are not going to be used for some teret any more. What is St Mary and other saints have to do with that verse any way? Degesadigs is not their wish, I wonder if Pope Shenouda and their coptic abalat do that.

Time of Bekidusan sim mekeled is about to be over. Join the army of the lord brother and let us do some clean up. Back to basic, back to bible and reclaim the true teaching of our forefathers. Christ the bridegroom will return soon, he expectes his bride (the church) to be clean and blameless. Yetesfa gebreselase zebihere bulga teretateretoch stinks - strong unpleasant smell. We don't need a perfume to change that smell, what we need is to take out that dirty socks (Awald) and their supporters - MK out of our church. Don't be left behind.

    Read Revelation 3 - 4.

  16. No one of us will inherit God's Kingdom with out humility. There is no question we are all under the influence of the devil, the prince of this world because look at us, we all have different ideas and views, this is not fruit of Christianity but the fruit of the works of the flesh, which the devil sows. Our fathers taught its not primarily by discussion and arguments that we will defeat this devil among us, but by prayer, fasting, and prostrations. We should all ask our selves how many of us have achieved this? Yes the answer is well know, if we had we would not be spending our time setting up blogs, or giving comments on blogs, blogs that do not bring unity but strengthen disunity. Egzio benel yetekmal enji, meto shi blog benesera andenetachinn ayatinakerewim. first of all if we have different opinions about our church we should talk eye to eye and not over some blog, where the world can see the silliness, Christians arguing is an oxymoron. The people of love, agape, humility, yeah right. Second of all, why are we arguing over things of Faith, such as intercession of saints, or St. Mary's Covenant, etc... we cannot not change it, its Faith. And please do not come back and quote me verses about Faith, I am aware of what the Bible says, but Orthodox Tewahedo draws its Faith from the Bible and Holy Tradition whether they are oral or written. This is fact, cannot be changed. Secondly, concerning 'reforming' or 'changing' the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, we need to evaluate two things, one who has the ultimate power to make changes concerning cannon or sereat (because no one can change the things of Faith) its the Holy Synod. Therefore if we really have a concern relating to church cannon laws let us forward it to our sebeka gubaye or presiding Bishop. Two, the Bible and Holy Tradition teaches that we aught to reform and change ourselves first, have we done so, who hear can say, i am fully reformed to be a perfect child of God? if not then that is where our energy should be focused, and not trying to reform and change the Church outside our own selves. Believe me when we are in front of the just Judge, Our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, He will ask us about the five requirements (fed me, give me drink, visit me in prison, clothed me, sheltered me) I am sure we all know what those are, we should be setting up blogs that will help us positively answer those questions and not waste our time fighting a worthless battle. Saint Paul fought the good fight. I am not against fighting for truth, but first fight against sin within our selves; then when we have conquered that, lets fight sin outside. If we say I have conquered sin already and I am ready to tell followers of the EOTC the need reformation, it makes us proud and pride comes before fall...sorry i made this long. I am just sad to see us who call ourselves Christians without any faith. Our real fathers should us the way but we do not want to accept them. Unfortunately for us there are those who are listening outside of the "Ethiopian race" and are living with God, His Mother St. Mary, the Saints and Angels, while we still here thinking we know it all...check the monastery of Waldeba, foreigners coming for research, observe the way of our Fathers and gave up their current life and chose to live there. And know they are researching themselves, weeding out every evil, this my brothers and sisters is the calling of Christianity, studying and changing our selves so God can find some reason to have mercy on us. Arguing about Saints and Holy Books will not make us righteous. Good night
